The Department of Geography will continue to build its reputation as one of the leading undergraduate and postgraduate geography programmes in Tamil Nadu state in the areas of mapping science, global systems analysis, image processing science, environmental analysis and planning, and urban and regional planning. The faculties of the Department will work to maintain, update, and improve the curriculum associated with the programmes. Our programmes and curriculum will provide a balance of theory and practical skills, equipping students with an academic background that prepares them to address environmental, planning, and other geographically oriented problems. We aim to aid our students to fill the gap between the entrepreneurs and the academicians in executing regional development plans to fulfill the needs of the people of this economically backward part of the state.

Our commitment also includes preparation of our students to think like geographers, earth scientists, and planners, to cherish and enhance our communities and the natural environment and to assume significant roles in problem solving using critical thinking, research, and communication skills developed in their learning experience.
The Under Graduate course in Geography (B.Sc., Geography) was started in the year 1968-69, which was the same year the college is also started. During that time, as the college is a Men’s College and so the male students were admitted for this course. However the Government of Tamil Nadu ordered to convert all Men’s Colleges into Co-educational College during the year 1997-98. Following this order, our College came forward to offer courses to both Men and Women from that year onwards. The Post Graduate course in Geography (M.Sc., Geography) was introduced in 2012-13 academic year.
Geography discipline is penetrating into all spheres of human activities and therefore it is necessary to prepare the students to cope with the advanced developments in various fields of Geography. The main objectives of the Department have been a) to impart physical, cultural and social relevant knowledge at under graduate and post graduate levels by a judicious mix of theory and practical aspects , b) to impart knowledge in conventional and recent concepts and applications in various areas of Geography, c) to train the students in various practical aspect of Geography through field study, and d) to provide wide choice of elective subjects which are relevant with updated and new areas in various branches of Geography to meet the needs of all students.
They are also required to take compulsory courses on Environmental Studies and Value Education at Under Graduate level. The course of study has been periodically updated and it was revised in 2012-13 under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). For effective teaching the Department is equipped with modern teaching aids like Smart Board with LCD Projector. The department has a well-equipped Cartography and GIS Laboratory. This includes Survey of India Topographic sheets of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on 1:250,000, 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scales. There are number of survey equipments like chain, plane table, dumpy levels, clinometers, prismatic compasses etc. The PG lab has 2 PCs with latest configurations with peripherals like laser printers and internet connection. The Department acquired modern tools like Digital Planimeter, Mirror Stereoscopes, Pocket Stereoscopes Hand held GPS receivers. The students are trained to use these instruments and software as part of their curriculum. Department recently procured a laptop computer and a LCD projector which are effectively used for class room teaching.
Presently the Department with the faculty strength of six (Permanent – 3 & Guest Lecturers – 3) and offers programmes B.Sc. and M.Sc. Geography. The faculty members are actively involved in research and disseminate their findings through publications in terms of research papers in National and International journals, books and presentation in conferences, seminars and workshops.
