Profile

The Department of Economics started functioning the Day Course during the Year 1973-74 and the Evening Course in 1974 -75. After that, only the day Course is serving till date and the Evening Course was closed during the year 1977-78. Initially, the college is a Mens College, and therefore the male students are admitted for the course. However, the Government of Tamil Nadu ordered to convert all Mens Colleges into Co-Educational College during the Year 1997-98. Our institution is not an exception to this change and both Men and Women are benefitted from the Year 1997-98.  M.A Economics course was introduced during the Year 2012-13. Both M.Phil (FT/PT) and PhD (FT/PT) research programmes in Economics are in operation from the year 2014 -15.

The main objective of the department is to impart socially relevant education at postgraduate level by a judicious mix of empiricism and theory. Adequate exposure is provided to all the M.A students in Statistics and Mathematics. They are also required to take compulsory courses on Economics of Environmental Studies and Value Education at UG level and Human Rights at the PG level. The syllabus and pattern of the study are updated periodically, and the University recently updated syllabus in the year 2017-18 under choice based credit system. For effective teaching, the department is equipped with modern teaching aids like Smart Board with LCD Projector.

Presently the department is functioning with the faculty strength of twelve members. The department offers programmes such as B.A, M.A; M.Phil and Ph. D. The faculty members are actively involved in Research and disseminate their findings through publications in terms of Research papers in National and International journals, books and presentation in conferences, seminars and workshops.

Awareness Rally Programme on Wearing Helmet and Road Safety

The Department of Economics conducted awareness programme on wearing helmet and road safety on 25.07.2017. The Namakkal district Superintendent of Police Mr. Ara.Arularasu was the chief guest of this programme which was conducted in the college premises in front of the department. He spoke about the importance of wearing helmet and several road safety measures. He asked the students to wear helmet and create awareness regarding this in their locality. Dr.A.Leela Glory Bai, Principal of the college presided over the function and Dr.M.Kumaravelu, Head of the department of Economics felicitated. The faculty members and students of the department of Economics and faculty members of other departments participated. A special Bike-Riding procession was arranged by the department. The police officers and Economics department students participated in this procession holding awareness slogans. This procession started from the college premises and passed through the many places of Namakkal town. At the end of the programme students distributed pamphlets containing helmet awareness and road safety measures to the public.

Exhibition on Importance of Wearing Helmet and Road Safety Measures

A special exhibition was conducted by the Namakkal Police Department on 25.07.2017 in the Namakkal town. This exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.A.Leela Glory Bai, Principal of the college. The students of Economics department participated in this exhibition and they explained the pictures and portraits to the public.

Progamme on Agricultural Farming

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK- Agricultural Extension Centre), Namakkal conducted a programme on “Sabatham Yerpom, Saathippom” on 29.08.2017. Many talks were given on keeping vegetables farming in the garden, New Agricultural Technologies available for farming, soil fertility. The faculty members and students of our department participated in this programme and gained knowledge.

Career Guidance Programme for School Students

The Department of Economics conducted career guidance programme for school students on 30.08.2017. The higher secondary students of Aniyapuram Higher Secondary School, Namakkal district participated in this programme and they were given guidance to carry out their higher studies and they were also given talks on “How to Prepare and Write Competitive Examinations”. Our faculty members addressed to the school students in this regard.

Conducting Inter -Collegiate Competition

The Department of Economics conducted inter-collegiate elocution competition on 06.02.2018. The students studying in the colleges affiliated to the Periyar University were participated in the competition. Dr.A.Leela Glory Bai, Principal of the college inaugurated and Dr.M.Kumaravelu, Head of the Department felicitated the programme.

Parent –Teacher Meeting

The Department of Economics conducted Parent –Teacher meeting on 07.02.2018 in the department. The students of our department participated in the meeting along with their parents. The parents actively participated and they known their wards performance. They also gave suggestions for the department.

Inauguration of Economics Association -2020

Economics Association was inaugurated by the department. Dr.P.Murugan, Principal, inaugurated the association and delivered his address. Dr.M.Kumaravelu, Head of the department presided over the function and faculty members and students of the department participated.

Research Activities

The department offers M.Phil and Ph.D Programme in Economics (Both Full Time and Part Time Mode). Apart from this, individual Projects are given to the Post Graduate students of Economics and Group Projects are given to the final year undergraduate students of Economics. The faculty members are publishing their articles in the reputed journals.

WORKSHOP AND SEMINAR

Workshop Conducted

The Department of Economics conducted workshop on “Awareness on Financial Education – Financial planning for Young investors” on 23.08.2017. This workshop was sponsored by the Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Dr. N. Chandrasekaran, member All India NAAC Peer Team and farmer principal of Kandaswami Kandar’s College, Velur, Namakkal district delivered address on the topic.
